My First Job Post-Grad: McDonald's Edition
With a tumultuous week ahead of us, I thought I would share some good news before it all inevitably hits the fan. In September, I OFFICIALLY accepted a RETURN offer from McDonald’s to work in their global supply chain sector! It’s taken me a while to get to this blog post, but I’m so excited and wanted to share how I aced the internship and got the job.
I started my 8 week internship in June, and wrapped up by the mid-August. During those 8 weeks, I had learned everything from working cross-functionally, to key supply chain practices like requirements gathering, to fun new foods that were coming out that year (hello spicy chicken nuggets!). By the time I was done, I felt SO prepared for a career in supply chain and a career at McDonald’s.
As we all know, the internship world got turned upside down when COVID-19 started spreading like wildfire. Like most companies, my internship ended up being a virtual experience. In the beginning, I was somewhat stressed and worried of the idea that I wouldn’t be able to actually meet anyone or be able to make any genuine connections.
So because of that, I laid out goals for the summer that I wanted to achieve during my 8 weeks. First, I wanted to meet as many people at the company as possible. Second, I wanted to get a solid grasp on real life supply chain practices. And lastly, I wanted to make a genuine impact and connection with the company.
By the time the summer had wrapped up, I had completed every single one of those goals. I had over 55 1:1s with McDonald’s employees, including people on the C-suite level (which I think my manager thought was insane). I learned a crash course on what it takes to really work in sourcing. I left with mentors and real friends. Once I had wrapped up everything, I realized how good it felt knowing that I had done what I sought out to do.
After that, it was just a matter of waiting. Let me tell you, those two weeks between finishing and getting that offer call was filled with anxiety and lots of stress eating. I kept thinking about if I could have done anything differently or if I hadn’t done enough. But at the end of the day, I knew I had done the best that I could and that’s all anyone could really ask for.
So one I finally got the call, I was ELATED. My future finally felt tangible and real. And with that, I could feel all the stress sink away. I had gotten a job! A real life, big girl corporate job!
I know my situation is very unique in comparison to what people are going through right now. I know how privileged and lucky I am to have snagged a job during one of the craziest years, and for that I feel so grateful.
So for the rest of senior year, catch me apartment browsing, furniture shopping, and just plain excited for what’s to come. If you’re currently on the job market, just know that I’m thinking of you and sending you ALL the luck.
